CHAPTER 10

Faith raised an eyebrow as she looked around. “Any ideas on how to get out of here and make a phone call to Tegan? Because I don’t see any magical portals labeled ‘Exit’ around here.”

Eve surveyed our surroundings, her gaze sweeping over the ancient stone walls and the eerie, flickering torchlight that lined the catacombs. “Right. Leaving the catacombs is the next puzzle to solve. How hard could it be?”

I chuckled dryly and wanted to curse my best friend. “You just had to say that, didn’t you? The universe loves challenging us. We aren’t going to find the way out standing here. Might as well meet whatever’s in store head-on.”

With our senses on high alert, we began our search for an exit. As we wound our way through the dimly lit catacombs, I marveled at the rich history that surrounded us. It filled the very earth beneath our feet with the stories of countless souls who’d come before. It boggled my mind to think about it. Thoughts about what their lives and deaths had been like filtered through my brain as we searched endlessly through the dimly lit passages.

After what felt like an eternity of winding tunnels and eerily quiet chambers, we finally stumbled upon a narrow, winding staircase leading upward. Faith pointed to it with a raised eyebrow. “Think that could be our way out?”

Eve chuckled as she put one foot on the bottom step “It’s either that or a cleverly disguised trap that is going to lead us to a secret lair of Vatican guards. After all, I did curse us a bit ago.”

I gently shoved Eve, encouraging her to go up the stairs. “And you just redeemed us. It’s the only way up we’ve found. Might as well check it out. You still have us hidden?”

Eve snorted. “Yeah, I let go of the silencing spell, though. I figured we hadn’t encountered anyone, and I wanted to save my energy. If this goes anywhere we don’t want to be, then we will hear lots of screaming.”

We made our way up the stairs cautiously, which seemed useless with the echoes of our footsteps reverberating off the stone walls. The further we ascended, the more the air changed, becoming fresher and more inviting. My heart skipped a beat, knowing we were nearing our escape.

Finally, after what felt like another lifetime of climbing, we reached a heavy wooden door. Faith pushed it open, revealing the grandeur of Vatican City beyond. The sight was awe-inspiring. The ancient feel continued above ground with the majestic architecture and centuries of history spread out before us.

As we stepped out into the bustling city, I inhaled deeply and smiled. “Just another day at the office. Escaping Vatican catacombs? Check. Now, let’s find a quiet corner to call our very own relic hunter.”

We navigated the labyrinthine streets of Vatican City until we found a quiet corner where there were fewer people around to hear our conversation. Without hesitation, I took out my phone and dialed Tegan’s number.
